Horses
I have painted and drawn horses from a very young age and always remember being fascinated by them. Through my experience of several years of riding, I have a thorough understanding of horse anatomy and movement, all of which is valuable when creating a painting of an equine subject. I took part in a workshop run by the Society of Equestrian Artists in Porlock, Somerset, where I painted horses from life in natural surroundings. I take inspiration from some of the great horse painters and equestrian artists including A J Munnings, George Stubbs and Frederic Remington. |
Wildlife
The natural world is another favourite subject of mine and Exmoor has no shortage of inspiration. I love to walk here with my camera and have been lucky enough to photograph some of the animals, birds and creatures living in this part of England. I only use my own photographs or copyright free images as reference material to create an artwork. Images of wild deer, hares and birds can be found in my wildlife portfolio, all sensitively reproduced in a detailed painting or drawing. I have a range of miniature watercolours of Exmoor Wildlife which I display at the Lyn Art & Craft centre in Lynton - please see my Links page. |
Places
Travel is another favourite of mine. Luckily for me, my husband also has an interest in the outdoors and visiting new places.Wherever we go I will usually take a small sketchbook and the camera is (almost) never out of my hands, a huge chunk of my computer hard-drive is purely reference photos! The city has the same appeal to me as wide open deserted spaces, and the landscape closer to home will inspire me just as much as the most exotic location. Exmoor has no shortage of inspiration. I am currently experimenting in oil paintings of local landscapes in an Impressionistic style, and having fun doing so! |
Life Studies
Over the years, I have attended many life classes, beginning when I was introduced to this traditional practise during my Art Foundation course. I have amassed a large portfolio of work from these classes where I have used different media, my favourite being oils and pencil. Nothing compares to sitting in a class in front of a model, it really it the best way to improve your drawing skills. We are all so familiar with the human form and can tell when it appears in proportion, and a small movement can change the whole structure of the pose. |
